Word of the Day: Influence
“He’s just such a jerk,” Rose said, shaking her head at her friend, Julieanne. Julieanne nodded, not sure what to say. Every time friends met up to take their Monday-morning walk, Rose would spend several minutes bashing her husband– talking about how he never helped around the house, was never nice to her, and got mad when she maxed out her credit card. Julieanne would stay quiet as she listened to the rant, but internally, she would cringe. She wished they could talk about something else, but Rose always seemed to bring the topic back to how horrible her husband was.
Later that day, Julieanne was doing the dishes, when a thought crossed her mind– “Rose thinks her husband doesn’t help around the house– she should see what I put up with. My own husband hasn’t washed a dish in weeks.” Suddenly, Julieanne set her sponge down and stopped herself. She realized that the time she was spending with Rose was having an influence on her– and it wasn’t good.
The next time the two friends took a walk, Rose started again on her husband-critique session. This time, Julieanne held her hand up. “Rose, I’m sorry, but I don’t want to make a habit of critiquing our husbands. Plus there’s so many other fun things to talk about. I noticed you’re wearing new shoes?” Rose paused for a minute– but it wasn’t long before she started animatedly telling a story about how she found her new shoes online.
We’re all aware that the people around us influence us– for better or for worse. In today’s podcast Tricia pointed out that after Elijah confronted Ahab, Ahab humbled himself. It’s sad to think that Ahab may have been a strong follower of God if it had not been for the negative influence of Jezebel.
Today’s Challenge
Who are you allowing to influence you? A good question to ask is…if someone said “You remind me so much of [your friend’s name,]” would you be happy about that? Pray that God fills your life with people who bring you closer to Him and influence you to further His kingdom in your everyday life.
Memory Verse
Proverbs 13:20- “Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.”
