Word of the Day: Dependence
You could probably guess the most common addictions:
Alcohol (28.3 million Americans)
Nicotine (23.6 million Americans)
Marijuana (14.2 million Americans)
But what about the non-substance addictions that sneak into our lives?
One study found that 77% of young adults who used Tik Tok found it addictive.
40% of Americans report they ate food recently out of stress instead of hunger (one symptom of a food addiction)
The average person touches their phone over 2,000 times a day
Most adults spend 7 hours a day staring at a screen
The truth is that it is easy to become dependent on anything and everything except God. It can seem way easier to reach for our phone, food, online shopping, or some other “harmless” addiction when we’re dealing with negative emotions, than to lean into Jesus.
Today’s Challenge
You may not be completely addicted to anything. But it’s human nature to turn to things other than God for comfort. Do you recognize that behavior in your life at all? Ask God to reveal to you the ways that you seek things other than Him for the security only He can provide.
Memory Verse
Romans 7:24-25 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!
