Word of the Day: Guide
“God, break my heart for what breaks yours,” Cindy prayed from her burgundy church pew.
Cindy opened her eyes and looked around. She half expected to suddenly notice someone in church who needed help. But all she saw around her were elderly ladies with blankets draped around their shoulders, men with their arms around their wives, and the curly hair of her own daughter sitting next to her.
As she went through her week, Cindy kept an eye out for something to break her heart— something like a fatherless child or a lonely widow— but nothing seemed to stick out. She had friends who had adopted children from horrible circumstances, run miles to raise money for charitable causes, and spent hours scooping food onto plates at the homeless shelter.
She wouldn’t have admitted it to anyone, but she felt like a “less-than” Christian, and hoped she would someday have an important cause to pray about and contribute to.
One day, Cindy picked up her daughter from school and noticed that she seemed sad. As her daughter began to talk about some girls who were mean to her, Cindy felt tears streaming down her own face. And as she drove and listened to her daughter, Cindy felt a gentle nudge on her heart.
Maybe she already had an important cause— motherhood. Cindy let out a breath. It sometimes didn’t seem important, but she knew that her heart broke for her daughter— and God’s did, too. She silently thanked God and asked Him to keep guiding her to love and parent her daughter in the best way possible.
Today’s Challenge
Ask God to guide you and show you what your calling is right now. He may simply want you to dig deeper into what you are already doing— or, maybe he will lead you into something new. Either way, with God it will always be a mystery and an adventure.
