Word of the Day: Slumber

Laura used her fingers to spread out the blinds just enough for her to look through them. Her heart beat wildly in her chest.

It was 1:00am, and her husband was working another overnight shift. Her border collie was barking at something, and Laura thought she heard an odd thumping sound on the porch.

When her glance between the blinds only showed an empty front porch, she took a breath and tried to calm herself down. She knew it was probably nothing. But still, her anxiety caused her blood to pump through her body like it was late for something.

This anxiety wasn’t new. Every time her husband was gone overnight, Laura would be struck with an intense, debilitating fear of a home intrusion. To cope, she would scroll social media for hours to numb out, or she would find herself in the pantry, taking big bites of chocolate cupcakes.

But Laura knew neither of those strategies were healthy. Determined to find a better way, she hit her knees in prayer. “God. Please help me. I’m so scared. I know you will protect me. Please help my heart and soul to believe that and help me to calm down.”

Laura stood up and realized she was standing right by her desk, where her Bible was opened up to Psalm 121, the passage she had read that day along with the Daily Bible Podcast:

He will not let you stumble;

the one who watches over you will not slumber.

Indeed, he who watches over Israel

never slumbers or sleeps.

The Lord himself watches over you!

The Lord stands beside you as your protective shade.

The sun will not harm you by day,

nor the moon at night.

Laura breathed out and closed her eyes. She felt a sense of peace and calm that she couldn’t explain. “God, thank you for watching over me.”

Today’s Challenge

God never sleeps. He is never off duty. You are never bothering Him when you turn to Him at any time of day. Next time you are scared, nervous, or feeling alone— turn to Him. He is always there.

Memory Verse

“I lift up my eyes to You, the One who sits enthroned in heaven.” Psalm 123:1

As Michelle and Tricia mentioned in today’s podcast, the other side of today’s word of the day is a warning to us not to “slumber,” or be spiritually complacent.

There are many ways we may be accidentally “slumbering” in our Christian walk. Let’s review what Tricia mentioned today:

  1. Slumber of deceit— Living dishonestly or in a web of lies (Psalm 120)

  2. Slumber of self-sufficiency (Psalm 123)

  3. Slumber of uncertainty (Psalm 125)

  4. Slumber of hopelessness (Psalm 126)

If you feel like you’re stuck in a spiritual rut, here are some ideas to refresh your relationship with God:
