Word of the Day: Tremble

Katharine adjusted her skirt and tucked it under her legs on the train seat. The train she was on was only a couple of years old, and her stomach fluttered with nervous butterflies as she thought of the journey she was about to make.

The train car started to chug, chug, chug slowly up the mountain. Katharine gripped her seat and looked out the window at the pine trees and the small lakes looking smaller and smaller with each “chug.”

Finally, with a whoosh, the train stopped. With careful steps, Katharine got off the train, and as she took in the view, she gasped.

She was 14,115 feet above sea level, on the top of Pike’s Peak in Colorado. Below her stretched the most beautiful perspective of the earth she’d ever seen.

Later, when referencing that moment, Katharine said “All the wonder of America seemed displayed there, with the sea-like expanse.”

The view was so inspiring that Katharine wrote a poem about it:

O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountains majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America!
God shed His grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

And that, of course, has since been made into a song, “America the Beautiful.”

Katharine’s response to seeing Pikes Peak is the same response we should have when it comes to God’s faithfulness, sovereignty, and strength.

As Michelle and Tricia said on today’s podcast, remember that the earth trembles, too, before the presence of God. And, in turn, we must do the same.

Today’s Challenge

Meditate on the hugeness of God today. Think about what He has created, all that He holds together, and all the knowledge He holds. The truth is that He is more than our minds can even comprehend or understand. Isn’t it a comfort to know we serve such a big God?

Memory Verse

Psalm 114:7 Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob. He turned the rock into a pool of water; yes, a spring of water flowered from solid rock.

Going Deeper than a Venti: Reflection

Psalm 112 points out that the righteous are unafraid of bad news or of their opponents because they trust the LORD.

In this society that is so focused on likes, followers, and influence, it can be difficult to remember that we must only fear God, and not be scared of the judgement, opinion, or actions of others.

This is referenced in other verses as avoiding the “fear of man:”

  • Proverbs 29:25 says, “The fear of man lays a snare, but whoever trusts in the LORD is safe”

  • Psalm 118:6 says, “The LORD is with me, I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me"

Of course, as with many things, this is easier said than done. Here are four ways to minimize the fear of man in your life:
