Word of the Day: Upright

In yesterday’s Coffee Club we talked about Billy Graham and his revivals— and we’ll continue studying Graham for one more day.

In a time when it seems like we hear about a new pastor’s moral failure once a month— it’s refreshing to be able to look at Pastor Billy Graham as a example of someone who was upright.

Of course, we know Pastor Graham wasn’t perfect—- no one is. But even after he passed away, no huge moral failures were uncovered. Many believe this is due to Graham’s commitment to integrity.

That commitment, it turns out, was actually a result of hearing those stories about pastors with sexual sins— even a fictional story about a womanizing evangelist named Elmer Gantry haunted Graham. So as a result, he created resolutions for himself in his ministry.

One of those rules was what is now known as the “Billy Graham” rule— to never “travel, meet, or eat alone with a woman other than my wife.” But there were actually three other rules he made for himself.

Graham said he resolved to never focus on getting money through ministry.

He said he would never exaggerate attendance or salvation numbers.

And lastly, Graham said he would never criticize the local church and instead would use his words to build it up.

Without a doubt, Graham walked uprightly.

Today’s Challenge

We would do well to follow Graham’s personal resolutions! Do you ever find yourself exaggerating, criticizing others, or focusing too much on money? Do you live a life that’s above reproach?

Memory Verse

Proverbs 28:18 says, "The one who walks in integrity will be delivered, but whoever is crooked in his ways will suddenly fall."
